Thanks Volunteers, Supporters, Staff and Patrons!

I want to say a great big THANK YOU to all of those who have had a part in helping to further God’s Kingdom through the ministry of Camp Jacob.  Because of you, many have come to know Christ, many have made life changing decisions for the cause of Christ, and for many a seed has been planted that will take root in the future.  Please continue to be a part of this great ministry.

Jacob’s Journal is the official newsletter of Camp Jacob.  It is published four times each year in February, May, September, and November and has a current distribution of about 2,800.  If you wish to have your address changed, added, or removed from our mailing list, or if you wish to elect our Journal e-mail option, please send an e-mail to info@campjacob.com or call (276) 926 - 8960.

What to Do with Your Tax Rebate Stimulus Payment

If you want to know what you can do with your tax rebate that will truly “stimulate” the economy, I know just the thing.  It won’t help to invest or save.  This will only allow a few executives, bankers, politicians, or thieves to steal it from you.  It won’t help to spend it on something you wanted.  This will only support China, while giving you something that will decay in a matter of months.  Contribute to Camp Jacob and you will stimulate the furtherance of God’s Kingdom and lay up treasures in heaven where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt.

An Egg-celent Time: First Easter Celebration and Egg Hunt

Our first Easter Egg Hunt at Camp Jacob in cooperation with the Dickenson County Christian Fellowship League was a great success.  Youth participated in egg decorating, egg gaming, egg hunting, great food and fun in addition to the sharing of the gospel.   We hope to continue this event in the future and hope to see even greater participation.

To Campers

Hey Gang,

Wow!  How awesome it was to see all of you who came to camp this summer.  We had loads of fun, made new friends, and were fired up to serve Christ. I certainly hope that it was an enjoyable and memorable summer for you too.

Now that school is back in session, it’s time to remind ourselves to hang on to the decisions that were made over the summer.  It would be real easy to go back to doing the same old things, but we must work to draw closer to Christ.  Remember that daily Bible reading, praying, going to church , and telling others about Christ are things that help us continue to grow as Christians.

Working in our Christian lives is like raising a garden.  If you put effort into planting and tending your garden, then you will get to enjoy the good things that are grown in that garden.  So, work to “grow” your life with Christ, and then you will enjoy the blessings.

    Love in Christ,

  Daniel Osborne

To Churches

From Camp Director, Daniel Osborne

If someone harvests tomatoes from a garden, does that person get to claim sole responsibility for how good or bad the tomatoes are that were grown in the garden even if someone else owns the property, planted the garden, and tended it until harvest time?  No, of course not!  So why is it that so many have the notion that Camp Jacob is my camp, my ministry, or my job when I am only one of those who carries the load?

In fact, several tasks were completed this year by others to carry out the camp’s ministry.  Here is a list of a few just to give you an idea.  Others did cooking, cleaning, cleaning, and more cleaning, electrical wiring, changing light bulbs and filters, setting up and taking down recreational items such as the iceberg and batting cage, mowing, weed eating, spraying, clearing of brush, maintenance of equipment, water-line plumbing, sewer-line plumbing, painting, roofing, flooring, putting together brochures, mailing brochures, recording applications, recording donations, paying bills, paying employees, planning games, setting up games, playing games, planning activities, setting up activities, conducting activities, planning devotionals, sharing devotions, encouraging others to attend camp, bringing youth to camp, giving of funds, praying for the ministry, promoting of the camp and its programs, preparing financial reports and tax returns, evaluating financial reports, recommending goals, recommending changes,

answering the phone, preaching, teaching, life guarding, training of lifeguards, fixing bunks, and just fixing in general.  Remember, this is just to name a few.

I Corinthians 3 demonstrates how that one plants and another waters, but God gives the increase.  Notice how that the tasks are to be completed by humans, and then God gives the increase.  It’s not that God needs us to do His work, but He gives us the opportunity to take part and gain the reward.

Without a doubt, God could provide all the needs of Camp Jacob without the help of anyone. However, God wants us to use our resources and abilities so that we may gain the reward.  Even though you might not be the one who directly leads a camper to Christ, you play a very important part by doing the things which eventually allow someone the opportunity to share the Gospel.  If you have an ability or resource that you would like to make available for God’s Kingdom through Camp Jacob, then please let us know.

Remembering Tim Elkins

It came as a shock when former Camp Director, Tim Elkins, passed away from a sudden heart attack on April 7, 2008, at the young age of 48.  Tim was well thought of by many of us. He loved, supported and worked for Camp Jacob much of his adult life. After 11 years of volunteering, he served as the director of Camp Jacob from 1999 to 2005.  After resigning, he continued to help as chairman of the promotional committee.  He will be greatly missed, but we know that we will see him again in heaven.  Thanks Tim for the life you lived.

Looking for Camp Ambassadors

What is a Camp Ambassador? A representative from a local church that supports the camp’s ministry by serving as a liaison between Camp Jacob and their church.  They should help keep their church informed of the events and needs of the camp, and also make camp staff aware of concerns or suggestions from their church.  Churches are asked to choose one or two Camp Ambassadors, then call us with the contact information for those chosen.

Several came to help get things ready for camp during the Spring volunteer workdays.

Participants of the annual Walk-A-Thon raised over $6,400 toward reducing the camp’s $120,000 debt on the dining hall.

Big kids enjoy mud puddles too!
